What Is Chipped Beef?

If you are new to this retro recipe for hot chipped beef dip and have never heard of it before then you are probably wondering what exactly is chipped beef? Chipped beef is beef that has been salted, pressed, dried and then cut into very thin slices. You will not find it in the deli section of your grocery stores or supermarkets, they are usually found where beef jerky would be or where your canned tuna and chicken is, it all depends on how your store is organized. There are different varieties of this kind of beef, but we love Buddig brand, because it is inexpensive and easy to find.

Can You Make A Cold Chipped Beef Dip?

This recipe is usually served warm, but if you prefer to have a cold dip then you can absolutely make this recipe as a cold dip. You would just mix all the ingredients together minus the walnuts and chill in the fridge until ready to serve. If you'd like to top with the walnuts at this point you can.

I would suggest trying this recipe both cold and hot to see which one you like best because the flavors can be different, its just all about your preference.

Can You Freeze Chipped Beef Dip?

I wouldn't freeze this recipe. Freezing this recipe can affect the amazing flavors in this dish; but what you can do is make it up to a week in advance if you are going to make a cold dip in an air tight container. For the hot version like ours you can prep it without the walnuts and store in an airtight container and when it is time to finish making the recipe I would take it out the fridge, allow it to reach room temperature so that the cream cheese is softened and then proceed to bake it with the walnuts on top for 15 minutes.

Recipe Notes:

If you plan to bring this appetizer with you to a party. You can serve it cold or warm.  If the oven is occupied where you are headed, and you want to serve it warm, you can also warm it up in the microwave.  Microwave it once you arrive for 2-4 minutes, or less time depending on the microwave.

Frito Scoops are bigger and better for dipping than regular Fritos.

What to serve chipped beef dip with?

Fritos are so good with this. We love Fritos scoops for great for easy dipping. You can also serve it with a sliced and toasted baguette.

Low Carb options:

We usually love to serve this dip with fritos, but it's nice to offer other options, like carrot and celery sticks. Veggies are always a great low carb option.

Make Ahead:

We recommend making this dip a day ahead (minus adding the walnuts). The flavors get better as it sits mixed together. If you are short on time, an hour or two before serving is good too. Keep it chilled in the fridge if making it days or hours ahead.
